How is your lumber harvested?
We selectively harvest our lumber. This means we do not participate in harmful clear-cutting. We only cut the trees mature enough to use creating healthy forests by removing the “suckers” (ones that take nutrients from the saplings), it’s called regenerative foresting.

What are the benefits of climate-controlled environments?
Wood is a natural product so some movement is normal seasonally. When the flooring is maintained between 6-8% moisture, achieved through climate control it helps alleviate the amount of movement you get seasonally.
Please Note: Offshore products that sit in shipping containers often contain formaldehyde to prevent mould growth, but also can gain a lot of moisture causing major movement once installed. This could affect the safety of your home and the lifespan of your flooring.
How long is my Black Bear warranty?

How far do you ship your hardwood flooring if I'm not local?
We can ship flooring internationally. Although delivery is not a service we provide to our clients, we are able to source and quote delivery internationally with local freight companies.
Can engineered floors be sanded and refinished?
Yes! Our engineered floors have a substantial wear layer and can be sanded 4-5 times without issue.
How do we control cupping and gaping?
Your home will likely experience seasonal temperature and humidity changes. Depending on where you live, this will make a huge difference to what product will work best for you.
In any case, your home should have a relative humidity of 40%-50% for solid hardwood, and 25%-70% for engineered hardwood.
If you do experience gaping in certain areas of your home, placing a portable humidifier in the space will help alleviate the problem. And vice versa.
If you are experiencing cupping place a dehumidifier to the area. This will help pull the moisture from the wood.
Remember, because wood is a natural/living product there will be some movement.
What is the best choice for dogs and/or children?
There are many choices available for families with children and animals. All real wood products will eventually succumb to some scratching and denting, but depending on species, distress options, and finish choices, a lot can be hidden.
We often recommend a wood with tons of character like a white oak or ash, or a very hard species such as hickory. Adding wire brushing will pull the grain out, but also disguises many imperfections.
What type of finish is used?
The finish used on all of our pre-finished products is 99% VOC free and formaldehyde-free. It is composed of 7 coats of aluminum oxide, and UV cured, creating a diamond-hard topcoat.
There is no off-gassing or harmful chemicals in the manufacturing processes (including the engineered flooring) as all of the processes take place in Ontario. All Canadian regulations are put into place, and we try to achieve Green environmental commitments as much as possible.
